Build a Stage for Them to Stand On
Recognizing and Reinforcing Personal Differences
On a trip to visit with our aunts and uncles around the southeast, my wife Debby and I learned that there are many different ways to love on people and show them that we care. Hear are some of the ways that you can “Build a Stage for Them to Stand On” – let them be in the spotlight.
-
Some folks want to sit on the couch with you and “talk about the good old days”.
-
Some folks want to “tell you about some of their adventures”
-
Some want to say “Hello”. How are you doing? I’m doing fine. It's been nice to see you.”
-
Some want you to “eat their cooking”.
-
Some want to “give you” – vegetables from their garden, fruit from their trees, crafts from their workshop, old family photos, house knick-knacks.
-
Some want you to “tell them” - about yourself, your job, your hobbies.
-
Some want to “show you off” to their friends.
-
Some want to “show you” – their town, their church, their place of work.
On the trip, we kept reminding ourselves that “it was not about us” – getting our way, always being comfortable, or telling our story. It was our chance to love others, our family – to “Build a Stage for Them to Stand On”. This tutorial will give details about the things we learned along the way that will be helpful to you. Of course, in the end, we got the greatest blessing of all as so many family members shared their lives and their love with us.
